The former chairman of the Republican National Committee Offers a modern day Hardball and describes how the game of politics is played at the highest levels.
Ed Gillespie has been at every step in the ascendance of modern conservatism, from 1994 Republican takeover of the House of Representatives to the managing of George W. Bush’s historic Supreme Court nominations. He was at the core of the historic 2004 election campaign-developing strategy, managing resources, approving television ads, and acting as a visible messenger for his party and president. National Review called him an “indispensable member of the triumphant troika under Bush” along with campaign manager Ken Mehlman and White House strategist Karl Rove.
Now, Gillespie discusses the 2004 presidential campaign, the G.W. Bush presidency and its policies, and the future of the Republican party. He describes the political cod of ethics-which centers on loyalty and personal sacrifice – and describes the theory behind his belief that the people who go the distance in politics respect the rules. He explains what it takes to plan and execute a winning campaign and highlights some mistakes of re cent failed campaigns. In his chapter on the media, Gillespie offers this rule: Define or Be Defined. He gets to the bottom of what an “ownership society” means for the country, and how his own view in its favor was shaped early on. In looking to the future, Gillespie discusses what will make the Republican majority endure, and he argues that the Democrats’ intolerance of the majority endure, and he argues that the Democrats’ intolerance of the majority party is only making government less effective.
